Facts On Storm Water Management

Mon, 11/14/2011 - 1:38PM by homerenovation 0 Comments - 36 Views

Storm water is any type of water that nature produces as precipitation such as snow, rain, hale, etc. Naturally, storm water flows into ground cycling the resource of water. However due to city developments, natural cycle is disturbed: it prevents natural water current and water absorption into the ground.

Storm water management is a process of directing water to special drainage systems. Lack of management leads to disasters such as downstream flowing, bank erosion, increased turbidity, habitat destruction, combined sewer overflows, infrastructure damage, etc. Two mostly used methods are Low Impact Development (LID) and Wet Weather Green Infrastructure.

LID tries to emphasize conservation of water and use of on-site natural features to protect quality of water. This method uses engineered hydrologic controls that mimics natural filtering system by infiltrating, filtering, storing, and evaporating storm water. Benefits of LID are: habitat protection, improvement of water quality, improved management of water quantity, etc. Wet Weather Green Infrastructure combines other successful methods of filtering, salvaging and preserving water. This system is aimed to keep environment safe while allowing people to access water simultaneously.

Storm water management can prevent disasters, but also help preserve environment while saving water for us.
